The Flying Feminist by Mary Boone

This picture book biography tells the story of lesser-known female aviator Lilian Bland. In 1910, she became the first woman in the world to build and fly her own airplane – when Amelia Earhart was only 12 years old.

Lilian refused to live by the prescribed notions of what it meant to be a lady in the early 1900s, earning her the nickname “The Flying Feminist.”

This book, based on research from Bland’s own letters and newspaper and magazine articles, includes back matter and a timeline showing how Bland’s flight fits in the timeline of better-known aviation accomplishments.
